about

"Johnny Thunders is one of my rock and roll / NYC heroes and I’ve been entranced by his legacy and story for a long time. His album, Hurt Me, which is basically just him and an acoustic guitar is a huge influence for me and kind of taught me that not every song or band needs to be 5 instruments, fast and loud. It’s such a stripped down album but you don’t notice that aspect of it at all while listening. Look In My Eyes is one of my favorites on that album, and the lyrics jumped out to me as being able to transition to a different arrangement well—I heard it and thought, this could be a Johnny Cash song too.

We were trying to finish arrangements for our second full length, Crying Eyes. I traveled down to Nashville to do overdubs on a few songs at The Butcher Shoppe, which is where we recorded a large part of the album. We lined up Dan Dugmore on Steel, who tracked with us on the previous sessions, and he recommended Glen Duncan on Fiddle, so we brought him in. Dan is so talented, he played on all of Linda Ronstadt’s albums through the 70’s and most recently played on Kacey Musgrave's grammy winning song Space Cowboy. He’s got a very sweet personality and a really distinctive psychedelic style.

So I went to Butcher Shoppe with the goal of tracking overdubs and I wanted to cut this acoustic version of Look In My Eyes with pedal steel and fiddle. It had been a mainstay of our acoustic live show and we demoed it as a 3 piece on a 4 track. We all set up in the same room, I went over the songs a few times and then we tracked it live in one or two takes. The mix is just from the board after the session by the engineer, Sean Sullivan."
